MZ-2

This pioneering BOSS pedal blended an analog distortion circuit with digital processing to produce massive tones for metal and other heavy styles. A multi-mode selector provides three doubling options and two specially tuned chorus modes, unlocking a range of sounds that infuse the high-gain saturation with rich spatial depth.

Explanation

1

LEVEL

0–100

Adjusts the volume when the effect is used.

TONE

0–100

Adjusts the tonal character of the effect sound.
Turning the knob clockwise emphasizes the high-band audio, and turning the knob counterclockwise cuts the high-band audio.

DRIVE

0–100

Adjusts the distortion depth.
Turning the knob clockwise gives a deeper distortion effect with longer sustain.

2

MODE

SGL, DOUB I, DOUB II, DOUB III, CHO I, CHO II

Switches between the six modes.
The effects for each mode are as shown below.

SGL: single mode
This mode offers distortion sound only.

DOUB I-III: doubling mode
Adds a short digital delay (doubling effect) to the distortion for a thick sound. The delay times get progressively longer with the I, II and III settings.

CHO I-II: chorus mode
Adds a digital chorus effect to the distortion for a thicker sound.
Chorus type II offers a deeper chorus effect than type I.

OUTPUT

TYPE1, TYPE2

Specifies how the effect is output when the outputs are connected in stereo.

TYPE1: When the MODE is set to DOUB I-III or CHO I-II, the distortion + delay (chorus) is mixed with the distortion to be output.

TYPE2: When the MODE is set to DOUB I-III or CHO I-II, only distortion is output to the left channel, and distortion + delay (chorus) is output to the right channel. This offers a spacious sound.
